Discover the Wild Heart of Sri Lanka: Udawalawe National Park Safari Experience

A Sanctuary for Elephants and Untamed Beauty

Nestled in the southern dry zone of Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is one of the most remarkable wildlife destinations in the country. Renowned for its large population of wild elephants, the park offers an unforgettable Udawalawa safari experience and a window into Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity.

Why Visit Udawalawe National Park?

If you're dreaming of getting up close to majestic Asian elephants in their natural habitat, Udawalawe safari is your ideal stop. With its wide-open grasslands (particularly during dry season June to October), scattered waterholes, and mountainous backdrops, the park is not only a haven for wildlife but also a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.

Best For: Elephant sightings, birdwatching, short safaris.
Location: Distance from Colombo to Udawalawa is about a 4-hour drive.

Weather Udawalawe: from November to January, experience North-East monsoon rains.

Wildlife Encounters

Udawalawe is home to over 1000 elephants, making sightings almost guaranteed. You might see them bathing, feeding, or traveling in herds depending on the time you visit the park. But elephants aren't the only highlight:

  • Water buffaloes and Crocodiles

  • Golden Jackal

  • Leopards and wild cats (rare)

  • Monkeys (Grey Langurs and Toque macaques)

  • Over 180 species of birds, including eagles and hornbills and many more.

  • Different habitat types include: grassland, shrubs, mixed vegetation, dry zone forest and riverine forests.

Best Time to Visit

The park is a year-round tourist attraction, but the dry season (June to October) is the best time to visit, as animals tend to gather around water sources, making wildlife spotting even easier. However, if visiting from November to January, early morning safaris are better to avoid evening monsoonal rains.

Udawalawa Safari Tips

  • Choose an early morning or evening safari for cooler temperatures and more active animals.

  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching.

  • Wear neutral-coloured clothing and sun protection.

  • Don't forget your camera—the views are stunning.

  • Half day (about 3 hours) or full day safaris are available.

  • Do not forget to bring plenty of water and some snacks.

Visit the Elephant Transit Home / Elephant Orphanage Sri Lanka

Just outside the park is the Elephant Transit Home, a rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves. Unlike other places, these elephants are re-released into the wild once they’re old enough, perfect for ethical wildlife enthusiasts. You may have chance to see some of them inside the park and learn their interesting stories from your guide during your Udawalawa safari!
